How Does the Swivel Joint of a Loading Arm Connect to Pipes?
The swivel joint of a loading arm (fluid loading and unloading arm) is a key component, whose design and function are crucial for the normal operation of the loading arm. Composed of rotating parts and seals, the swivel joint of a loading arm is mainly used to connect different components of the liquid loading and unloading arm, enabling relative rotation and bearing loads. It is one of the most important accessories of the loading arm, and its good sealing performance, high pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, etc., ensure that liquid substances do not leak during transportation.

The rotational seals of the swivel joint mainly fall into two categories: composite material seals and mechanical seals.
Composite material seals have relatively better sealing performance and are used in occasions where hydraulic cylinders have intermediate positioning. Since the seals themselves are smaller in size, the swivel joint using composite material seals can be made more compact.
The cost of composite material seals is also much lower than that of mechanical seals.
The composite material rotational seal consists of two parts: an outer ring and an O - ring. The O - ring plays a role in supporting the outer ring, making the entire rotational seal easier to install.
Mechanical seals theoretically can achieve contact - free sliding and can have a long service life. However, mechanical seals are more complex to manufacture, have high precision requirements, and are relatively expensive.
The process of connecting the swivel joint of the loading arm to the track involves multiple key steps and precautions. The following is a detailed connection process:
Preparatory Work:
Ensure that the swivel joint is intact. Check for any subtle damages or defects to avoid affecting subsequent use.
Ensure that the dimensions of each part where the loading arm is connected to the swivel joint match each other. If there is a mismatch, adjust or repair it.
Installation Position and Alignment:
When selecting a swivel joint, consider factors such as high temperature resistance, sealing performance, and simple structure to ensure that the cooling system of the loading arm is unobstructed and provides excellent heat transfer and heat dissipation functions.
During connection, ensure that the concentricity of the input shaft of the speed reducer and the input shaft of the motor is consistent to ensure smooth mechanical operation, reduce wear, and improve efficiency.
The outer part should be parallel to the flange to ensure the stability and reliability of the entire system.
Connection Steps:
For the connection between the loading arm and the trestle, a standard flange matching the loading arm should be equipped, and the distance from the flange to the track surface should be maintained within the range of 3.7 - 4.0 meters.
During installation, start from the basic swivel, gradually install the vertical aluminum pipe, and finally install the balancer.
When installing the balancer: first lift the oil loading arm to an angle of about 60°, then install the pins on both sides of the balancer on the hooks, align the double ears of the pull rod at one end of the balancer with the single ear on the swivel housing for pin installation, and finally install the cotter pins.
Adjustment and Testing:
When adjusting the balance force, place the oil dispenser in a horizontal state, unscrew the end cap of the balancer, and adjust the screws to ensure that the loading arm is stable within the range of - 5° to 60°.
After installation, carry out system testing and inspection to ensure that the connection between the swivel joint and the track is stable and reliable without leakage.
Precautions:
During handling and storage, prevent the swivel joint from collision and falling to protect the interface and internal parts.
When installing the threaded swivel joint of the loading arm, pay attention to whether the thread directions of the inner and outer pipes correspond to the rotation direction of the drum, and the thread rotation directions of the inner and outer pipes must be consistent.
Use a hose to connect the swivel joint to the pipeline to avoid rigid connection, so as to reduce the auxiliary weight of the joint and extend its service life.
Following the above steps and precautions can ensure that the connection between the swivel joint of the loading arm and the track is stable and reliable, and guarantee the normal operation of the loading arm system.
