What is a Loading Arm and How Does It Work?

A loading arm, also known as a loading/unloading arm, is a specialized equipment widely used in the chemical, petroleum, and energy industries for transferring liquid or gaseous materials between storage tanks, tank trucks, ships, and other transport vehicles. Unlike traditional hoses, it features a rigid structure composed of multiple arm sections, rotary joints, and a base, which ensures stability and safety during material transfer.

Its working principle is relatively straightforward. First, the base of the loading arm is fixed on the platform or the ground. Through the flexible rotation of the rotary joints between the arm sections, the end of the arm can be accurately connected to the interface of the transport vehicle or storage tank. After the connection is completed and sealed, the material is transferred through the internal pipeline of the loading arm. During the transfer process, the rotary joints allow the arm to adjust its angle freely according to the position of the transport vehicle, avoiding damage to the equipment or material leakage caused by improper alignment. After the transfer is finished, the arm can be folded and reset to save space.
