Applications of Stainless Steel Loading Arms

Stainless steel loading arms (primarily constructed from 304/304L and 316/316L grades) are the preferred equipment for the fluid loading and unloading of corrosive, sanitary-grade, cryogenic, and marine-environment media across industries such as chemicals, energy, food, and pharmaceuticals, thanks to their exceptional corrosion resistance, hygienic properties, low-temperature toughness, and structural strength.
I. Core Materials and Performance Comparison
304/304L: Offers general corrosion resistance, good low-temperature toughness, and cost-effectiveness; suitable for general chemicals, fresh water, food products, and cryogenic LNG applications.
316/316L: Exhibits superior resistance to chloride ions (e.g., seawater, salt spray) and stronger resistance to acids and alkalis; suitable for chemical acid/alkali handling, port terminals, offshore platforms, and applications requiring high levels of cleanliness.
2205 Duplex Stainless Steel: Features high structural strength and stress resistance; suitable for highly corrosive environments as well as extreme operating conditions involving high pressure or deep-sea applications.
II. Key Industries and Application Scenarios
1. Petrochemicals (Most Widespread)
Applicable Media:
Refined Fuels: Gasoline, diesel, kerosene (corrosion-resistant, anti-static)
Chemical Raw Materials: Organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, benzenes, ketones, etc.
Acidic & Alkaline Media: Moderate-to-strong acids and bases, such as hydrochloric acid, dilute sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), etc.
Operation Modes: Top/bottom closed loading and unloading for road tankers and rail tank cars; vapor recovery
2. Energy & Cryogenic Fluids
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) / Liquefied Ethylene:
Material: 304L/316L Austenitic Stainless Steel (resistant to cryogenic temperatures down to -196°C; no cold embrittlement)
Functions: Cryogenic liquid-phase loading/unloading, vapor return, nitrogen purging for anti-icing
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): High-pressure, low-temperature fluids such as propane, butane, etc.
3. Fine Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals
High-purity chemicals, reagents, solvents (prevents metal ion contamination)
Pharmaceuticals / Biologics:
Requirements: 316L material with internal and external mirror polishing (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm); easy to clean and sterilize (CIP/SIP)
Applications: Loading/unloading of APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients), Water for Injection (WFI), syrups, and sterile liquids
4. Food & Beverages (Sanitary Grade)
Applicable Media:
Edible oils, syrups, soy sauce, vinegar, alcoholic beverages, milk, fruit juices, etc.
Requirements: 304/316 food-grade polishing; no dead corners/crevices; compliant with FDA/GB standards; prevents bacterial growth
5. Ports / Terminals / Offshore Platforms
Marine Loading Arms:
Material: 316L (resistant to chloride ion corrosion from seawater; salt-spray resistant)
Applications: Ship-to-shore loading/unloading of crude oil, fuel oil, chemicals, and seawater
6. Other Industries
Water Treatment: Pure water, wastewater, acidic/alkaline effluent
Pulp & Paper / Printing & Dyeing: Corrosive slurries, chemical auxiliaries
Asphalt / Specialty Oils: High-viscosity media requiring heat tracing and insulation (High-temperature resistant stainless steel)
III. Stainless Steel Loading Arms vs. Other Materials
Superior to Carbon Steel: Rust-proof, requires no anti-corrosion treatment, long service life (15+ years), clean and non-contaminating.
Superior to Aluminum Alloy: Greater corrosion resistance, withstands higher temperatures and pressures, suitable for acidic, alkaline, and seawater environments.
Superior to Fluoropolymer-Lined Arms: Greater structural rigidity, withstands higher temperatures and pressures, eliminates the risk of liner detachment (though not resistant to strong oxidizing acids, such as concentrated nitric acid).
IV. Key Selection Criteria (Quick Reference)
General Chemicals / Food Products → 304 Stainless Steel
Media Containing Chloride Ions / Seawater / Acids & Bases → 316L Stainless Steel
Cryogenic LNG → 304L / 316L (Cryogenic Grade)
Strong Oxidizing Acids (e.g., Concentrated H₂SO₄, Fuming Nitric Acid) → Do not select stainless steel; opt instead for fluoropolymer-lined arms or special alloys.
